14th Festival of Black Cultures of Mogi das Cruzes

Nov 6, 13, 14, 15, 20 & 29 Free

Dance, circus, reggae, pagode, passinho dance circles and the traditional Crowning of the King and Queen of Congo, from November 6 to 29, in the Centro, Sabaúna and Jundiapeba. All free.

Promoted by the Mogi das Cruzes Department of Culture, the festival celebrates the African-rooted traditions present in the city throughout Black Consciousness Month.

The opening is at Theatro Vasques (Nov 6, 7 pm), with the contemporary dance show A[MAR]KALUNGA. Then come a funk passinho dance circle at Praça Monsenhor Roque Pinto de Barros (Nov 13, 9 pm), Gumboot Dance Brasil (11 am) and the circus of Cia. Circo de Ébanos (2 pm) at Praça Coronel Almeida (Nov 14), plus performances by Kid Santú and Filosofia Reggae on the Sabaúna stage (Nov 15, from 3 pm).

On the November 20 holiday, the Largo Bom Jesus hosts the Crowning of the King and Queen of Congo at 9 am, an intangible heritage of the city, and in the afternoon the pagode shows of Pagode da 27 (3 pm) and Pagode do Canta (5 pm). The closing is on the 29th at 3 pm, with a passinho dance circle at Praça da Liberdade, in Jundiapeba.

Tip

November 20 is worth the whole program: the crowning starts early, at 9 am, and the pagodes take over the afternoon in the same square.
